Iloilo city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is considering proposals to postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), according to Malaca±ang's announcement on Friday. The idea is being explored as a potential measure to enhance government efficiency and achieve significant financial savings.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro communicated the President's willingness to evaluate any legislative measures that might lead to improvements in governance and cost reduction. "Ang Pangulo at gobyernong ito ay open sa lahat ng maaring suggestions na siyang makakabuti sa ating bansa (The President and the government are open to all suggestions that will benefit the nation)," Castro remarked to reporters in Iloilo City.

Highlighting the potential benefits of postponing the elections, Castro mentioned that lawmakers have estimated possible government savings of PHP16 billion. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the proposal would require thorough assessment by the President. "So, kung magkakaroon sila ng anumang bill or panukala dito ay aaralin po ito ng Pangulo. Basta po ito ay makakabuti sa ating bansa, open po ang Pangulo para diyan (if there is any bill or measure, that will be studied by the President. As long as it benefits the country, the President is open to that)," she added.

The proposal for postponement is being driven by some House lawmakers aiming to reschedule the BSKE initially set for November 2026. They advocate reallocating the unspent election funds to address the government's energy emergency. However, the Commission on Elections has voiced readiness to consider the proposal but pointed out potential constitutional issues regarding the reallocation of the budget to other government programs.
