Antique Braces for Heavy Rains Due to ‘Bavi’-Enhanced ‘Habagat’

Antique: The Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) is bracing for heavy rains due to the southwest monsoon or "habagat", which will be enhanced by Super Typhoon Bavi. PDRRMO head Broderick Train said in an interview on Monday that they have already prepositioned two teams in the towns of Sibalom and Culasi to augment the personnel of their municipal counterparts.

According to Philippines News Agency, assets such as life rafts, generator sets, and other rescue equipment have been prepositioned in the areas. Train highlighted the vulnerability of Sibalom and Culasi to flooding and landslides. The heavy rainfall could cause the overflow of the Sibalom River, the longest river system in the province, and lead to landslides in the upland areas due to the softening of soil. Additionally, the coastal area of Culasi might experience a storm surge due to the anticipated heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Train advised residents in flood and landslide-prone areas to prepare for any adverse effects of the super typhoon and consider pre-evacuation if necessary. The PDRRMO is on heightened alert, awaiting a Memorandum Order from the Office of Civil Defense-Regional DRRMC in Western Visayas for the conduct of Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) to collaborate with partner agencies and offices.

During the PDRA, they will assess the preparations and resources available from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Integrated Provincial Health Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Department of Public Works and Highways, and other concerned agencies and offices. The strong typhoon will be named 'Inday' once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between the evening of Tuesday and early morning on Wednesday.
