Apayao Opens Biosphere Research Center to Support Biodiversity Studies

Apayao: The Apayao provincial government has opened a research center aimed at supporting scientists studying the province's UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve. The yApayao Biosphere Reserve (yABR) Research Center in Eva, Calanasan is ready to accommodate researchers conducting biodiversity, environmental, and ecological studies in the province, Governor Elias Bulut Jr. said.

According to Philippines News Agency, the facility was inaugurated on July 7, coinciding with the second anniversary of Apayao's inscription as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It will serve as a base for researchers, government agencies, academic institutions, and conservation organizations working within the protected area. The yABR will also house scientific references and data gathered through biodiversity surveys and research conducted across the province.

Research over the past several years has highlighted Apayao's ecological significance. In Calanasan, the province's core biosphere reserve area, scientists documented the first active Philippine eagle nest found in northern Luzon. Researchers have also recorded previously undocumented plant species, rediscovered rare flora, confirmed the presence of Rafflesia, and identified additional species of insects, vines, and other wildlife in Apayao's forests.

Governor Bulut stated that the province expects the UNESCO designation and expanded research activities to generate economic opportunities through increased scientific and ecotourism-related visits while reinforcing conservation efforts. He emphasized the importance of focusing on both protection and livelihood to ensure sustainable development.

Eva Garden was selected as the site of the yABR after the discovery of the first active Philippine eagle nest documented in Luzon drew national scientific attention to Apayao's forests and supported the province's nomination as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The research center was built by the provincial government as part of its long-term management program for the Apayao Biosphere Reserve.
