Jolo: The Philippine Army's 11th Infantry 'Alakdan' Division (11ID) commemorated the heroism of the late Brig. Gen. Teodulfo Bautista on Friday to mark the 48th anniversary of his death. Maj. Gen. Leonardo Pe±a, commander of the 11ID, led the commemoration at the Alakdan Parade Grounds of Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista, which houses the 11ID headquarters in Jolo, Sulu.
According to Philippines News Agency, the commemoration recalled the infamous Patikul Massacre of Oct. 10, 1977, when Bautista, then a 49-year-old commander of the 1st Infantry 'Tabak' Division, and 34 of his men were killed by the Moro National Liberation Front under Usman Sali while on a peace mission. Official accounts state that Bautista agreed to meet Sali at a public market in Barangay Danag, accompanied by Col. Gabriel Pangilinan, four lieutenant colonels, and 28 enlisted personnel.
Pe±a said their ultimate sacrifice stands as a lasting testament to the Philippine Army's courage and dedication to achieving peace through selfless service. 'Imagine the courage it takes to walk into danger unarmed, to offer one's life in the pursuit of peace. General Bautista's ultimate sacrifice reminds us that true leadership is not measured by power, but by the willingness to serve -- even unto death -- for the good of our nation,' Pe±a said, emphasizing that their example continues to inspire soldiers.
The annual commemoration concluded with the offering of wreaths and a moment of silence to honor Bautista and the 34 fallen soldiers.
