Manila: has called for the surrender of remaining New People's Army rebels in Northern Samar after a recent clash resulted in the deaths of two insurgents. The confrontation took place last week, leaving the local community on edge.

According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Carmelito Pangatungan, who leads the 803rd Infantry Brigade, expressed condolences to the families of the two rebels killed in the encounter in the upland Bulao village of Las Navas town on December 19. He highlighted the incident as a stark reminder of the human toll of armed conflicts and expressed hope for a future where peace, dialogue, and reconciliation can prevail.

In his statement, Brig. Gen. Pangatungan urged the remaining members of the communist terrorist group, particularly those in the sub-regional committee Arctic, to surrender and choose peace and reintegration while the opportunity is still available. The call for surrender comes as part of efforts to reduce violence and promote stability in the region.

The deadly encounter occurred when the two fighters attacked soldiers from the 20th Infantry Battalion who were on patrol. In the aftermath, troops recovered three M16 rifles from the scene. The military has increased its operations in the area following reports from residents about armed men threatening farmers and extorting supplies.
