Manila: The Pilipinas Sepak Takraw Association, Inc. (PSTAI) has issued a stern challenge to its athletes, demanding that they secure medals at the upcoming 20th Asian Games or face resignation. This ultimatum comes as the national team prepares for their departure to Nagoya, Japan, where the tournament will take place from September 19 to October 3.
According to Philippines News Agency, PSTAI president Karen Tanchanco-Caballero revealed this agreement during a media forum, emphasizing the expectations placed on the national team. Speaking at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, held at the Philippine Sports Commission media room, Caballero stated, "I'd like to share that there is already a courtesy resignation on all athletes if they do not come home with a medal." She highlighted the support that athletes have received over the years and asserted that it is only fair for the Filipino taxpayers to expect top performances from the team.
Despite the pressure, Caballero expressed confidence in the team's ability to succeed, citing their recent achievements at the ISTAF World Sepak Takraw Championship - 39th Thai King's Cup in Bangkok. The men's regu team (3-on-3) secured a historic silver medal, while the women's quadrant (4-on-4) claimed the bronze. The Philippines also celebrated its first podium finish in 33 years at the 2022 Hangzhou Asiad, winning bronzes in both the men's regu and men's quadrant.
Caballero is optimistic that the team's extensive training leading up to the Asian Games will enable them to compete effectively against Asia's elite players. "They have extensively prepared for this, and I'm confident as for the preparations of our coaching team," she noted. She reiterated the challenge presented by the National Sports Associations (NSA) during the Kings' Cup, asserting that athletes must deliver results at the Asian Games if they couldn't do so in the World Cup.
Key players such as Jom Lerry Rafael, who contributed to the team's silver and bronze victories, will lead the charge alongside Jason Huerte, Reynaldo Asilum, Ronsited Gabayeron, and Glindel Phori. The women's team comprises Mary Ann Lopez, Kristine Lapsit, Rachelle Palomar, Nieva Jane Salon, Heart Makiling, and Rhea Mae Dela Cruz. The men's regu team faces tough competition from Thailand and host Japan, while the women's quadrant will compete against Vietnam, Thailand, and India.
