Bacolod City Mayor Addresses Social Media Disinformation on Class Suspensions

Bacolod city: Mayor Greg Gasataya has called out those behind the disinformation on social media regarding announcements on weather-related suspension of classes in this highly urbanized city. In a press briefing on Monday, Gasataya said there were those spreading wrong information that the city government announced classes had been suspended on Monday but no such announcement came from him or the City Mayor's Office.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gasataya has already asked the City Legal Office to coordinate with the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the matter. He expressed concerns that such disinformation creates chaos and anxiety for parents and children, and appealed to the public to refrain from spreading false information. Gasataya emphasized that Bacolodnons can verify announcements on his personal Facebook page, 'Greg Gasataya,' and noted that information is also sent to media outlets.

On Monday morning, the city government's official Facebook page, 'Bacolod - Stronger Together,' issued a disclaimer about the fake announcement of suspension of classes. A misleading Facebook post, mimicking past official announcements, circulated among groups and pages, falsely claiming a class suspension for July 21, 2025. The disclaimer clarified that the city had not issued any suspension of classes and cited the latest 5 a.m. update from PAGASA, which did not warrant a suspension based on the Department of Education guidelines. The disclaimer also noted that parents or guardians have the discretion to decide whether to send their students to school, prioritizing their welfare or safety.
