Baguio Road Accidents Drop 26% After Speed Limit Implementation

Baguio: The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) reported a significant 26.36 percent drop in vehicular incidents during the second quarter following the strict enforcement of speed limit regulations across the city.

According to Philippines News Agency, a 26.36 percent decrease in vehicular traffic incidents was recorded in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter, with the number dropping from 258 documented cases to 190. BCPO Director Col. Ruel Tagel attributed the decline to the intensified enforcement of traffic laws and city ordinances.

In June alone, authorities cited 796 motorists for violating the "King of the Road" Ordinance, and issued 237 tickets for overspeeding. The "King of the Road Ordinance" requires drivers to slow down when approaching pedestrian lanes, while the Speed Limit Ordinance mandates a maximum of 20 kph within the Central Business District (CBD) and other densely populated areas, and 30 kph as the general speed limit across the city.

Though the speed limit ordinance was passed in 2019, its enforcement was intensified only recently following a directive from Mayor Benjamin Magalong. The order came after investigations revealed that many accidents caused by mechanical failure have worsened by excessive speed, leading to drivers losing control.

Aside from ordinance enforcement, Tagel said the BCPO continues to implement 'OPLAN D.R.I.V.E.', a traffic safety program anchored on the three E's: Enforcement, Education, and Engineering. 'With increased police visibility and consistent operations, we're not only apprehending violators but also fostering road discipline among motorists,' he said.
