Barangay and SK Elections Confirmed for November 2 Despite All Souls Day

Iloilo city: The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) are set to proceed on November 2, despite coinciding with All Souls Day, as confirmed by Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson George Erwin Garcia. Speaking at the inauguration of the Comelec Integrated Field Office - Western Visayas, Garcia emphasized that the decision regarding the election date was made at the discretion of Congress.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia noted that the timing aligns with a long weekend, allowing voters to return to their provinces and participate in the electoral process. He stressed the significance of the BSKE, highlighting that local governance issues often originate at the barangay level, making these elections crucial for the community.

Garcia reported that the printing of ballots has been completed, with approximately 95 million ballots prepared-70 million for regular voters and 25 million for the Sangguniang Kabataan. Comelec has also acquired most of the necessary materials for the elections. The next phase involves training teachers who will oversee the polls and the filing of certificates of candidacy in September.

Garcia expressed confidence in the preparations due to the rescheduling of the elections, though he hoped there would be no further delays. He underscored the importance of regular elections to maintain public engagement and provide an opportunity for voters to assess the performance of their leaders.

The inauguration of the Comelec Integrated Office in Iloilo City was attended by various officials, including Commissioners Rey Bulay, Ernesto Ferdinand Maceda Jr., Nelson Celis, Maria Norina Tangaro-Casingal, and Noli Pipo, as well as Regional Election Director Dennis Ausan, provincial election directors, and Mayor Raisa Tre±as. The new four-story facility at the Iloilo City Government Complex in Barangay Taal in the Molo district is designed to accommodate the Office of the Election Officer, the Iloilo Provincial Election Supervisor, and the Regional Election Director, along with providing dormitory space and multi-purpose areas for regional activities.
