Bangsamoro: Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua signed a Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) bill into law that reconstituted the parliamentary districts in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). This significant development was announced 44 days before the region's first-ever parliamentary elections scheduled for October 13.
According to Philippines News Agency, the newly signed law, known as Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 77, was officially posted in the Bangsamoro Official Gazette. The legislation amends BAA No. 58 by redistributing the seven parliamentary district seats that were originally allotted to Sulu. This change comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that excluded the province from the BARMM.
The reallocation of parliamentary seats now stands as follows: nine seats for Lanao del Sur, five each for Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur, four each for Basilan and Tawi-Tawi, three for Cotabato City, and two for the Special Geographic Area.
Naguib Sinarimbo, Chairman of the Bangsamoro Parliament's Committee on Local Government and author of the bill, emphasized the importance of the bill's passage. He stated that it fulfills one of the primary commitments of the extended transition parliament. Sinarimbo expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for ensuring that the principal mandate of the national law, which postponed the elections in BARMM from May to October 2025, is finally realized. He added that this move clears any uncertainties regarding the conduct of the first BARMM Parliamentary elections in October 2025.
