Manila: Thousands of residents in the Caraga Region, particularly those from vulnerable sectors, have started benefiting from the government's "Benteng Bigas Meron Na" program through the Department of Agriculture (DA). The program was formally started on July 20 in the town of San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, followed by Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte, and Butuan City.

According to Philippines News Agency, the main beneficiaries of the program are the farmers, fisherfolk, drivers, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable sectors in communities. Leo Amarillo, Market Specialist I of DA-13, mentioned in an interview that the local government unit of San Miguel and two cooperatives in Kitcharao and Butuan City have started the rollout of the program. San Miguel has been allocated 500 bags of rice, and 100 bags each have been allocated to Hifas Multipurpose Cooperative in Kitcharao and De Oro Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative in Butuan City.

Amarillo further stated that the allocations for the five provinces in the region are still being processed. Once these processes receive approval from the national office, the program will be implemented in different towns in the region. DARBECO General Manager Evelyn Magtibay praised the program's implementation, stating it provides residents with access to affordable rice. Magtibay expressed satisfaction in serving the people through the program following its start in their area.

Adriano Benigay, a resident of Purok 4, Barangay Antongalon, Butuan City, shared his experience of purchasing rice during the program's opening. He emphasized the importance of the program for vulnerable community sectors and expressed hope for its continuity. The initiative, led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., aims to provide affordable and quality rice to Filipinos and enhance food security in the country.
