Bicol: The crime rate in the Bicol region dropped by 9 percent in the first semester of 2026 following sustained police operations, the Police Regional Office in Bicol reported on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-5 spokesperson Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib stated that incidents involving the eight focus crimes totaled 1,026 from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2026, which is lower than the 1,229 incidents recorded in the same period in 2025. "This indicates a decrease of 203 crime incidents, highlighting the effectiveness of the unit's intensified crime prevention initiatives, intelligence-driven operations, and proactive law enforcement strategies," she said.
Calubaquib detailed that the eight focus crimes recorded during the period include 64 cases of murder, 23 cases of homicide, 196 cases of physical injury, 261 cases of rape, 102 cases of robbery, 343 cases of theft, three cases of carnapping of motor vehicles, and 34 cases of carnapping of motorcycles.
The unit achieved a 95.61 percent crime clearance efficiency, while 53.22 percent of the recorded cases have already been solved through the collective efforts of police investigators, operating units, and other concerned law enforcement personnel. She emphasized that the decline in crime volume can be attributed to the continued implementation of the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly the Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which serves as a strategic framework for improving operational effectiveness, strengthening command supervision, and ensuring the efficient utilization of police resources to address priority security concerns.
Moreover, Calubaquib mentioned that the implementation of the Safer Cities Initiative, which commenced in April 2026, boosted police visibility and community engagement by intensifying the enforcement of local ordinances, addressing public safety concerns, and promoting discipline and accountability in public spaces. Through the Safer Cities Initiative, police personnel became more visible in communities, enabling authorities to respond to public disturbances immediately, prevent potential security threats, and address violations that may contribute to disorder and criminality when left unattended.
The initiative also strengthened collaboration among law enforcement units, local government units, and community stakeholders to maintain a safer environment. Calubaquib added that the continuous conduct of focused law enforcement operations, anti-criminality campaigns, intensified patrol activities, community-oriented policing initiatives, and strengthened coordination with partner agencies have significantly contributed to the improvement of the peace and order situation in the region.
