Manila: The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has announced that Filipinos do not need an existing valid government-issued ID to apply for a Postal ID. This announcement aims to simplify the process for first-time applicants.
According to Philippines News Agency, first-time applicants are only required to submit a birth certificate, a barangay certificate or other acceptable proof of address, and a duly accomplished Postal ID application form. These have long been the standard requirements for obtaining a Postal ID.
Postmaster General and CEO Maximo Sta. Maria III stated that the Postal ID is designed to help Filipinos establish their identity, especially for those applying for their first government-issued ID. By providing a birth certificate and proof of address, eligible applicants can start the process of obtaining this trusted government-issued ID.
If applicants cannot present a barangay certificate, they may submit alternative proof of address, such as recent electricity, water, internet, or utility bills that reflect their name and current residential address.
PHLPost issued this clarification to enhance public awareness about the application requirements and to address the misconception that another valid government-issued ID is necessary to obtain a Postal ID. The Postal ID is beneficial for first-time ID holders, including students, job seekers, senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, and individuals in underserved communities. It is accepted in various public and private transactions like opening bank accounts, applying for a passport, claiming parcels, and processing legal and financial transactions.
