Manila: Domestic tourism experienced significant growth across the Philippines during the Christmas break, with Filipinos flocking to various local attractions such as beaches, heritage sites, and mountain retreats. The Department of Tourism (DOT) highlighted this surge as a critical component of the national tourism industry.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOT reported a strong increase in visitor numbers from mid-December through the end of the holiday season. Boracay Island in Western Visayas led the way, recording 118,745 tourist arrivals from December 15 to 28, 2025. Cruise ships like the Star Navigator and Norwegian Sun also contributed to the influx, making multiple port calls in the region.
Central Visayas showed robust tourism figures as well, with Cebu City attracting 102,124 visitors and Panglao Island in Bohol welcoming 62,240 tourists, despite earlier natural disasters in the area. In Eastern Visayas, Tacloban City saw 25,194 overnight guests, while Malajog Beach in Calbayog City, Samar, was the most popular site with 56,543 tourists.
Baguio City remained a top draw in the Cordilleras, with 117,137 visitors enjoying its cool climate and festive attractions from December 15 to New Year's Eve. In the Bicol Region, Camarines Sur and Albay received 92,000 and 45,000 visitors, respectively, with many enjoying views of Mayon Volcano.
Northern Luzon destinations also saw steady traffic, with La Union recording 47,338 visitors and Ilocos Sur welcoming 32,232 tourists. Nueva Vizcaya attracted 10,012 visitors, favoring nature-based travel.
Island destinations like El Nido, Palawan, Coron, and Puerto Galera continued to be popular, drawing tens of thousands of tourists. In Mindanao, Sarangani province and Siargao Island also recorded significant visitor numbers, with Bukidnon and Camiguin Island attracting smaller yet notable crowds.
Intramuros in Metro Manila remained a focal point for holiday visits, with many enjoying its historic sites and Christmas Masses at the Manila Cathedral. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized the role of domestic tourism in driving the industry and supporting local economies.
The DOT is also preparing for the 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Tourism Forum in 2026. Preparations include coordination with Cebu City and the rollout of Project H.A.R.A.N.A. to prepare volunteers and stakeholders for the event. Frasco expressed confidence in the Philippines' ability to host the forum, aiming to showcase Filipino hospitality and strengthen regional cooperation.
