Tacloban: The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has assured travelers that flight cancellations at Tacloban Airport, previously affected by an issue with the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), will no longer occur.
According to Philippines News Agency, CAAP Eastern Visayas area manager Danilo Abarreta confirmed that the PAPI issue, which had temporarily caused the cancellation of two night flights by Philippine Airlines and one by Air Asia, has been resolved. These cancellations impacted flights bound for Cebu and Manila on Monday.
"The cancellation of flights was just temporary due to a discrepancy in the PAPI reading of pilots as reported to us on Monday," Abarreta stated. He added that corrective maintenance on the PAPI lights at runways 18 and 36 was completed promptly.
A PAPI discrepancy refers to the inaccuracy of the lights in reflecting the aircraft's position relative to the ideal glide path during approach. This issue can arise from incorrect PAPI settings, physical obstructions, or human error in interpretation. PAPI is an essential visual aid on the side of a runway, providing pilots with guidance on their descent path during landing by using a series of lights to indicate whether the aircraft is above, below, or on the correct glide path.
