Tsunami Alert Prompts Suspension of Classes and Government Work in Eastern Visayas

Tacloban city: Classes and government work were suspended on Wednesday afternoon in many parts of Eastern Visayas after authorities issued a tsunami warning following the magnitude 8.7 earthquake off Kamchatka, Russia. Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez suspended both classes in all levels and work in the government, heeding the advisory of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), as a precautionary measure.

According to Philippines News Agency, in Northern Samar, Governor Harris Ongchuan also suspended classes in all levels in all areas except for the towns of Catubig, Las Navas, Lope de Vega, and Silvino Lubos. The local governments of Dolores and Llorente in Eastern Samar also suspended classes and government work.

Eastern Samar Governor Ralph Vincent Evardone, meanwhile, ordered the implementation of preemptive safety measures in coastal areas following the tsunami advisory. 'Residents are advised to stay away from beaches, move inland if living near the shore, and secure boats. Boats already at sea should stay offshore,' Evardone said.

In an advisory issued Wednesday noon, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Eastern Samar's coastal areas may experience minor sea-level changes, with waves expected to be less than one meter high based on data from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. 'As a precaution, we strongly advise everyone in coastal communities to stay away from beaches and shoreline areas until this advisory is officially lifted. Fisherfolk and residents near the shore are encouraged to move farther inland, and boat owners are urged to secure their vessels or move them away from shallow or exposed coastal waters,' the PCG-Eastern Visayas said.
