Camarines Sur: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Bicol (BFAR-5) on Tuesday announced that recent tests revealed fish in Camarines Sur are free from cyanide, a development expected to benefit the local economy and health of residents.
According to Philippines News Agency, BFAR-5 spokesperson Rowena Briones highlighted that local communities were significantly impacted by a fish kill on May 23 and 24, as the province relies heavily on clean water for food and livelihood. Briones explained that for fisherfolk and coastal communities, the cyanide-free test results directly affect their income and food security. Consuming contaminated fish or seafood can lead to health issues, making these findings crucial for public health.
Tests conducted in Calabanga and Tinambac towns confirmed that fish samples from the affected areas tested negative for cyanide, indicating the absence of toxic chemicals in the water. Briones noted that this sampling is vital for monitoring aquatic environments and allows for timely actions to mitigate impacts and implement recovery measures. Cyanide contamination poses a serious threat to marine life, potentially causing fish kills and damaging coral reefs.
Further tests showed a positive increase in dissolved oxygen levels in the affected waters. These levels had previously reached critically low points, but their rise is seen as an indicator of improving water quality in the area.
BFAR-5 continues to implement various programs such as monitoring and surveillance to combat illegal fishing, and the Fish Health and Water Quality Program to maintain aquatic health. Their Coastal Resource Management program aims to rehabilitate and protect critical habitats like mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. The agency collaborates with local government units and communities through technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives.
Briones urged the public to remain vigilant and participate in protecting water bodies and marine resources. She emphasized the risks posed by contaminated water to marine life and human health and encouraged sustainable practices to support ocean management and protection.
