CamSur Farmers Start Climate-Resilient Training to Combat Heat Effects

Tigaon: Agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) in Tigaon, Camarines Sur have commenced a season-long training program to adopt climate-resilient farming methods in response to rising provincial temperatures. The Farmers' Field School (FFS), situated in Barangay May-anao, is a joint initiative of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) under the Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (PAHP) program.

According to Philippines News Agency, DAR Secretary Conrado Estrella III said the initiative aims to modernize farming through inter-agency collaboration. "Through this teamwork, farmers receive not just land, but also the support they need to succeed," Estrella said in a statement Wednesday.

Members of the Sagurong Creek Irrigators Association (SCIA) have begun cultivating crops including eggplant, chili, lettuce, and squash. Technical sessions are scheduled to run until May 30. SCIA President Jose Oxidental emphasized the association's commitment to the project. "Our members, whom we proudly call the OFWs, or Original Farm Workers, are determined to make this project work. If we continue working together, we can improve food production and sustain this effort," Oxidental was quoted as saying.

Barangay Captain Marcelo Villafuerte said the project will be integrated into the village's Halina't Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG) Program to address local food security. Engr. Aiza B. Mendez of DAR revealed that the association will receive a two-seater, four-wheel-drive mini-truck to assist with agricultural logistics.

East-West Seed Company further supports the initiative through seedling provisions and training. This follows a PHP194,430 allocation from the Department of Agriculture for farm implements and garden tools. Mendez said DAR regional offices will continue monitoring the site to provide technical assistance and establish market links for the association's produce.
