Cardinal David ‘Signs Off’ for Papal Conclave

Manila: The head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has expressed readiness to attend the papal conclave that is set to begin on May 7. In a post on Facebook on Monday night, CBCP President Cardinal Pablo David announced he is "signing off" starting Tuesday night for the gathering meant to elect the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis who died on April 21.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cardinal David stated that all communication devices would be surrendered to allow for full spiritual engagement in the task of selecting a new Pope. He and the other cardinals will be staying at the Casa Santa Marta starting Tuesday for the duration of the conclave. The event, which will be attended by 133 cardinal electors, is set to take place at the Sistine Chapel, which will remain sealed until a new pontiff is elected.

As part of the election process, black smoke will be emitted from a chimney over the Sistine Chapel if voting is inconclusive, while the emergence of white smoke will signify that a pope has been elected. Cardinal David expressed hope and gratitude, urging the faithful to continue their prayers for the successful election of a new leader of the Church. A two-thirds majority of the electors present is required to elect the new pope.
