Manila: Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has expressed his openness to convening a special session of Congress to tackle pressing issues, as Mindanao grapples with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake and the nation faces growing economic challenges. Cayetano emphasized the importance of addressing the urgent needs of the Filipino people, stating that the special session is constitutionally sanctioned and necessary.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cayetano highlighted the immediate attention required for Mindanao following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, urging that rescue and relief operations should not be hindered by political disagreements. He stressed the urgency of legislative action if needed and called for collective efforts in delivering aid to those affected.
Cayetano underscored the need for lawmakers to prioritize public welfare over politics, whether through legislation, agency coordination, or direct community assistance. He emphasized that hearings can be postponed, but rescue missions and relief deliveries cannot be delayed.
The senator also pointed out the necessity of strengthening disaster rehabilitation efforts. While relief operations have shown improvement, Cayetano noted that recovery work remains a significant challenge. He advocated for a robust system to address the recurring natural disasters the Philippines faces, including storms, volcanic activity, and earthquakes.
Cayetano stated that any special session should focus on implementing clear measures that benefit the populace. He mentioned ongoing communications with Malaca±ang regarding proposed bills for the UPLIFT program, indicating his readiness to act once these measures are prepared.
The possibility of a special session, which can be called by the President to address urgent issues outside the regular legislative calendar, was also discussed. Cayetano cautioned that the government must brace for broader economic issues caused by Middle East tensions, fuel prices, supply chain disruptions, and other factors, emphasizing the need for unity and continued efforts against corruption.
The senator concluded by reiterating the importance of national cooperation in tackling these challenges, urging public officials to work together for the country's welfare.
