Cebu Woman Arrested for Online Trafficking of Her Own Child

Lapu-Lapu City: A woman was apprehended in a coordinated entrapment operation for allegedly engaging in human trafficking activities involving her children through the internet, a police official revealed.

According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Lemel Gonda, head of the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit-Central Visayas, reported that the suspect's 15-year-old child and another minor were rescued during the operation in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Olango Island, on February 13. Gonda stated that the unit assisted the Women and Children Protection Center-Visayas Field Unit by performing an on-site cyber forensic examination on confiscated devices to strengthen the case against the suspect.

"The two minors are now undergoing psychosocial sessions with the social workers," Gonda informed the Philippine News Agency.

The police investigation commenced in July 2023, when an undercover officer discovered that the suspect was offering illicit services involving her children via online platforms. This led to an immediate rescue operation for her 15-year-old daughter and the subsequent arrest of the suspect. During the operation, another minor, believed to be a victim of the suspect's illegal activities, was also rescued.

Authorities also found evidence on a cellular phone seized from the suspect. She is facing charges under Republic Act No. 11862, known as the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2022.

"This case highlights the importance of online surveillance and undercover work in protecting vulnerable individuals, and we remain committed to dismantling human trafficking operations at every level," stated Police Regional Office-7 director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan.
