Pasay City: The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is urging both the government and the public to give long-term and permanent Filipino migrants the same recognition afforded to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), as it celebrated its 45th founding anniversary on Monday in Pasay City.
According to Philippines News Agency, CFO Chairperson Secretary Dante 'Klink' Ang II emphasized the significant yet often overlooked role of permanent migrants, including dual citizens, foreign-born children, and spouses of foreign nationals, who have settled abroad. He highlighted the need for equal appreciation and support for these migrants who contribute to national development in various ways.
Ang pointed out that out of the estimated 10.7 million Filipinos overseas, 62 percent fall under the CFO's mandate, which includes undocumented migrants abroad long-term. He noted that over PHP3.4 billion in donations have been made by these permanent migrants through CFO's Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) program over the past four decades.
To enhance diaspora engagement, Ang announced plans to expand programs such as the Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD) program, collaboration with Philippine Schools Overseas, and the enhancement of BaLinkBayan and PESO Sense programs. These initiatives aim to deepen connections with Filipino communities abroad and support their reintegration and participation in national development.
The CFO is also advocating for business-friendly reforms to encourage returning migrants and diaspora investors to contribute to the local economy. Additionally, Ang reiterated the CFO's commitment to migrant protection, highlighting the 1343 Actionline's efforts in addressing human trafficking cases.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Ang launched the 2025 Migration Advocacy and Media (MAM) Awards to recognize individuals and institutions that raise public awareness about the migrant experience. The awards cover seven categories and are open for nominations until July 31.
Ang expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for supporting the CFO's initiatives and urged continued collaboration among stakeholders, promising data-driven and responsive services to overseas Filipinos in the coming years.
