Manila: Holding special elections for the seven parliamentary seats originally allocated for Sulu is being considered as a potential solution to fill the seats that are currently "temporarily vacant."
According to Philippines News Agency, United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) president Murad Ebrahim shared that Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia proposed the idea during a discussion. Ebrahim mentioned that if the reallocation of the seven seats cannot be enacted in a timely manner, Chairman Garcia suggested the possibility of holding special elections at a later date. Ebrahim expressed agreement with this proposal, noting that if reallocation is not feasible, a special election could be a viable alternative.
The poll body assured that the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Parliamentary Elections (BPE) will proceed on October 13, with 73 seats available. Ebrahim conveyed satisfaction with Comelec's assurance that the elections will take place as scheduled.
Earlier statements from Comelec indicated that the vacancies could be filled through presidential appointment or by a ruling from the Supreme Court. Alternatively, future legislation from the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) or the Philippine Congress could provide a resolution.
