Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is keeping a close watch on developments in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as the region approaches the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections scheduled for October 13.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia has expressed particular concern over the Moro Islamic Liberation Front's (MILF) recent decision to prevent its members from engaging in decommissioning activities ahead of the elections. "We are closely monitoring the situation," Garcia stated during a telephone interview on Tuesday.
Garcia highlighted potential security challenges that might arise from the MILF's directive, particularly in relation to the enforcement of the gun ban, which is currently in place during the election period from August 14 to October 28. "It could affect the implementation of the gun ban," he noted.
Despite these concerns, Garcia reassured that there are no immediate election-related issues stemming from the MILF's order. "It has yet to reach the level of being an election-related concern," he added.
The directive in question was issued by MILF Chairman Alhadj Murad Ebrahim on August 16, instructing all commanders and members to refrain from participating in the decommissioning activities organized by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU). The Comelec continues to evaluate the situation to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming polls.
