Comelec Proclaims Gabriela Nominee Sarah Jane Elago as New House Member

Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc, acting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), has officially declared the Gabriela Women's Party as one of the winning party-list groups in the May 2025 midterm elections. During a ceremony at the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila, NBOC, chaired by Comelec Chairperson George Garcia, proclaimed Sarah Jane Elago as the party's representative and the newest member of the House of Representatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, the proclamation confirmed that Gabriela Women's Party secured the necessary percentage of votes under the party-list system, entitling its nominee, Sarah Jane I. Elago, to represent the party in the House of Representatives. Elago is set to serve a term of three years, concluding on June 30, 2028, in alignment with Section 7, Article VI of the Philippine Constitution.

In the recent party-list race, Gabriela Women's Party finished in 55th place, amassing 256,811 votes. Elago expressed her readiness to prioritize legislation focusing on the protection and welfare of women and children once she takes office. "The Gabriela Women's Party is the winner. This is a victory for women, who did not give up, stood up, and pushed for true representation in Congress," Elago stated in an interview following her proclamation.

Elago emphasized the urgency of taking her oath to start her legislative work without delay. She stated, "For Gabriela, any delay is unacceptable. Gabriela has long been ready to file priority bills for a long time. We are ready to assume office immediately."

The Comelec's decision to add one more party-list representative was made to meet the 20 percent party-list composition requirement of the House, as the 63 seats allocated during the May elections were insufficient.
