Manila: Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Wednesday resigned as House Speaker, stating his decision was made to allow full accountability and transparency amid controversies surrounding infrastructure projects. 'Today, with a full heart and a clear conscience, I tender my resignation as Speaker of the House of Representatives. I do this so that the Independent Commission on Infrastructure may pursue its mandate freely and fully - without doubt, without interference, and without undue influence,' Romualdez declared in his speech before the plenary.
According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez emphasized his commitment to ensuring the House of Representatives remained the people's House from the moment he first assumed the Speakership. He acknowledged that leadership requires confronting present challenges and reiterated President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recent call for accountability and scrutiny. Romualdez embraced this call, expressing that the issues with certain infrastructure projects have raised significant questions impacting both him and the chamber.
Romualdez explained that staying in his position would increasingly burden himself, the House, and the President he has continuously supported. After thoughtful reflection and prayer, he decided to resign, advocating for truth and justice to prevail. He encouraged his colleagues to continue their work with unity and determination and urged the Filipino people to maintain their faith in democracy, as it has the power for self-correction and renewal.
In his final remarks, Romualdez expressed his willingness to serve wherever needed and emphasized that his resignation was not a surrender but a service, demonstrating that sometimes leadership involves stepping aside for the institution's strength and endurance.
