Continuous Vigilance Urged as Rains Persist in Baguio

Manila: Mayor Benjamin Magalong on Monday urged residents to remain vigilant as persistent rains continue to saturate the ground, increasing the risk of landslides, soil erosion, and falling trees. "We will be experiencing more rains this week. Please keep yourself warm and always bring a raincoat or umbrella because rain is expected daily, especially in the afternoon. Clean your surroundings to prevent drainage systems from being clogged," Magalong said in a media interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, the mayor said he inspected parts of the city on Sunday and observed pine needles and garbage clogging road gutters. He urged residents to clean their frontages and nearby areas to keep waste from blocking drainage systems. Magalong said the city sustained only minor impacts from the rains that began last week, which were brought primarily by the southwest monsoon (habagat).

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported one partially damaged house, 11 fallen or leaning trees, two landslide and erosion incidents, two damaged riprap structures, and one flooding incident along Naguilian Road in Irisan. No casualties were reported, and no residents were evacuated.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Charles Carame emphasized that building resilience remains the priority of the office's programs, including initiatives implemented with barangay disaster risk reduction and management councils. "Resilience is not just about knowing how to respond to emergencies but how to actually prevent disasters from happening," Carame said.

Carame also mentioned that the city has lined up several activities this month, which is observed as National Disaster Resilience Month, to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience.
