Manila: Authorities arrested three individuals and seized some PHP11.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in separate law enforcement operations in Zamboanga del Sur and Lanao del Sur provinces.
According to Philippines News Agency, PHP9.47 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized in Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur, and the remaining PHP2.18 million in Marantao, Lanao del Sur. Zamboanga del Sur Police Director Col. Bonifacio Ara±as Jr. reported that three individuals were arrested in Pitogo, while other suspects managed to escape.
During the operation, police-issued uniforms, identification cards, and other government-issued items belonging to two police officers were recovered from two abandoned vehicles left behind by the fleeing suspects, Ara±as said. A thorough investigation is now underway, with appropriate criminal and administrative charges to be filed against those found responsible.
Ara±as emphasized the zero-tolerance policy of the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office against any personnel involved in illegal activities. He assured the public that no one is above the law, and the PNP remains committed to upholding integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
Meanwhile, Lanao del Sur Police Office chief Col. Caezar Cabuhat stated that smuggled cigarettes were recovered along the diversion road in Barangay Tacub Pindolonan. This followed a report by a village councilor and members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) who saw several individuals aboard three vehicles dumping contraband boxes upon noticing a police checkpoint.
"Acting on the report, responding personnel immediately proceeded to the area and recovered 51 boxes containing 2,550 reams of assorted alleged smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated market value of PHP2,181,984," Cabuhat said. The unidentified suspects abandoned the contraband in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.
The recovered cigarettes were brought to Marantao Municipal Police Station for documentation and safekeeping pending turnover to the appropriate agency.
