Manila: Cyber security and cognitive warfare were among the topics discussed during the meeting between Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Sweden Minister of Defense P¥l Jonson on Thursday. "We have very much to share in these two areas, and we will cooperate on that," Teodoro said in an online press briefing shortly after his meeting with Jonson in a hotel in Makati City.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DND chief stated that it is a "good policy" for the Philippines to operate on an "operationally secure basis" with all nations it is dealing with in terms of defense and security, even in the absence of a signed secrecy of information agreement. He emphasized the importance of respecting classified and sovereign items that are unique to another country.

Teodoro further highlighted the necessity for the Philippines to have "investable capital" to partner and engage in co-production with any entity or nation from which it plans to source its defense equipment. He noted that without such means, the Philippines' aspirations for a "true defense industry" would be unattainable.

In related discussions, Jonson expressed Sweden's interest in engaging with the Philippines regarding its expertise in civil defense and disaster management. He noted that their discussions covered the requirements for civil defense, civil preparedness, and disaster management.

Jonson also highlighted the prowess of Swedish defense technology, asserting the country's willingness to share its expertise with the Philippines. He pointed out Sweden's notable capability in designing and producing submarines and fighter aircraft, despite being a nation with a population of only 10 million people.
