Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced its collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to introduce an urban farming certification program aimed at supporting 'plantitos and plantitas' in their green endeavors.
According to Philippines News Agency, this initiative follows the signing of a five-year memorandum of agreement between the two agencies on August 5, which will institutionalize urban and peri-urban farming as a technical vocation. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the intent to enhance Filipinos' natural abilities with the right knowledge and skills, especially as interest in gardening surged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The partnership will integrate the Urban Agriculture Production NC II into the technical and vocational education system, offering training, certification, and career paths for urban agriculture enthusiasts. This development means participants can become certified practitioners, trainers, assessors, and educators in the field.
TESDA Secretary Kiko Benitez highlighted the significance of supporting the agriculture sector, noting its essential role in driving economic growth. He reiterated TESDA's commitment to investing in agriculture through scholarships and training, emphasizing the dual benefit of job creation and food security.
In addition to the certification program, TESDA's Complex in Taguig will be transformed into a flagship Urban Agriculture Technology Demonstration and Training Center. Additional hubs will be established at TESDA regional centers, DA facilities, and selected urban sites to bolster learning and innovation.
The collaboration will cover modern urban agriculture methods such as hydroponics, vertical farming, and composting, among others, to ensure climate-smart production systems. The initiative aims to empower Filipinos to engage in urban farming, create livelihoods, and contribute to economic growth, while also integrating food safety, biosafety, and good agricultural practices to benefit TESDA-certified graduates in various agriculture-related careers.
