Davao city: Commodity prices in Davao City's major public markets are reportedly 10 percent to 20 percent lower than those in Metro Manila, as stated by Department of Agriculture (DA) Assistant Secretary for Agribusiness, Market, and Consumer Affairs Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra.
According to Philippines News Agency, during her visit to the Agdao and Bankerohan public markets, Guevarra monitored the supply and pricing of rice, meat, and other basic goods. She observed that chicken is priced at PHP165 per kg in Davao, in contrast to PHP200 in Manila. However, rice prices remain comparable between the two regions.
The visit is part of the national government's response to a 60-day importation ban on regular-milled and well-milled rice, which has led to more stringent price and supply monitoring efforts.
Guevarra praised the Agdao market for its cleanliness and acknowledged Bankerohan for its affordable offerings. She urged vendors to ensure proper lighting that does not alter the appearance of meat and to clearly display price tags for consumer transparency. 'Let us be truthful and honest to our consumers,' she emphasized, reminding vendors of the importance of price visibility.
Additionally, she encouraged vendors to maintain market cleanliness and reassured the public of sufficient supplies of vegetables, fruits, and meats throughout the Christmas season.
