Davao Fault System Marking to Raise Awareness on Danger Zones

Davao: To further raise public awareness about the areas traversed by the Central Davao Fault System, the Office of Civil Defense-Davao, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) conducted a "walk-the-fault" activity in Barangay Mintal on Monday. CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran said the activity focused on the Lacson fault line. The agencies also launched an information drive to educate the public about earthquake-prone zones in the city.

According to Philippines News Agency, this is the fourth time such an activity has been conducted. The initiative began in 2019, and last year the Dacudao fault marking was completed. Baloran emphasized the goal of finishing the marking of all five fault lines in the city, which will help residents recognize potential earthquake hazards. The other three fault lines are Tamugan, Pangyan-Biao Escuela, and New Carmen.

Baloran reported that approximately 70 to 75 percent of the fault line markings have been completed to indicate surface locations only, as the depth of the faults remains unknown. He assured residents that similar activities will be conducted in remote areas, including in Paquibato District.
