Davao de oro: The municipal government of Mawab in Davao de Oro stated that its decision to deny a special permit for cockfighting events was based on legal non-compliance rather than political motives.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Myrill Apit clarified that the Mawab Gallera Cockpit Arena failed to secure the necessary franchise and mayor's permit mandated by Municipal Ordinance No. 001, Series of 2019, which was enacted by a previous administration. Apit stressed that the issue revolves around adherence to the law, not political affiliations or personal interests.

Apit further explained that the denial impacted events scheduled for January 12, 14, and 16, and countered allegations suggesting that the refusal was politically motivated. He reiterated that essential documents such as barangay clearance or tax payments are insufficient substitutes for the required franchise and permit. The mayor emphasized that these regulations are uniformly enforced across all businesses.
