Quezon city: Dengue cases in Quezon City have increased by 15 percent the past two weeks, with 16 deaths since January, based on the latest report from the QC Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD).

According to Philippines News Agency, data from the city government showed that between June 13 and 26, a total of 165 new cases were reported, up from 143 cases from May 30 to June 12. The daily average also increased from 10 to 12 cases in the same period.

The QCESD reported 5,399 dengue cases from January 1 to June 26, with District 2 experiencing the highest number of infections at 1,531 cases, which accounts for 28 percent of the total.

The city government noted that most fatalities involved children and young women. Among the 16 deaths, 12 were females aged nine months to 35 years old, with the 11-20 age group being the most affected, recording six deaths.

The fatalities were from various areas, including Bagong Silangan, Batasan Hills, Commonwealth, Fairview, Payatas B, and Tandang Sora.

The QCESD data also revealed that 46 percent of the total dengue cases exhibited warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting or diarrhea with blood, extreme thirst and paleness, persistent vomiting, fatigue, and weakness.

The city government has urged the public to seek immediate medical consultation at the first signs of dengue, such as fever and stomach pain. Free dengue testing and consultations are available at all city health centers.

In addition to regular search and destroy operations on possible breeding areas, the city government advises residents to keep water containers tightly covered and to use mosquito repellents and protective clothing.
