DENR-9 Provides Critical Support to Sarangani Earthquake Victims with Lumber and Cash Donations

Zamboanga peninsula: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional office in Zamboanga Peninsula (DENR-9) has extended crucial support to the earthquake-stricken communities in Sarangani province by donating over 7,000 board feet of lumber and providing cash assistance. The initiative involves repurposing confiscated timber to aid in the reconstruction of homes for those affected by the natural disaster.

According to Philippines News Agency, DENR-9 Executive Director Marie Angeligue Go stated that a total of 7,518.75 board feet of lumber had been transported to Sarangani to help earthquake victims rebuild their homes. The shipment, completed on Thursday, was divided into two batches due to the availability of only one transport unit for moving the repurposed timber.

Go emphasized that the transportation of lumber from Zamboanga del Sur to Sarangani was facilitated by TVI Resource Development Philippines Inc. through its corporate social responsibility program. The lumber originated from seized forest products by Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices in various locations across Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.

The cash aid, sourced from voluntary contributions by DENR-9 employees, was provided in an unspecified amount. Additional resources were also obtained from materials recovered under Special Tree Cutting and Earthballing Permits, as well as lumber turned over by the Department of Public Works and Highways from its projects.

Go highlighted the importance of repurposing these resources to deliver immediate aid without further stressing forest resources. A portion of the lumber was formally handed over to the municipal governments of Glan and Malapatan in Sarangani, with Glan Mayor Victor James Yap Sr. and Malapatan Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr. overseeing the distribution of materials to affected families.

The 512th Engineer Construction Battalion, 504th Combat Engineer Battalion, and members of the Citizens Armed Force Geographical Unit under the 73rd Infantry Battalion have commenced the construction of core shelters for displaced residents in Glan, contributing to the restoration of safety and stability in the community.

Go also expressed appreciation for the environmental officials of Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani provinces for their assistance in providing temporary accommodations and logistical support to DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula personnel during their mission.
