Tacloban city: The Department of Education (DepEd) condemned the tragic school shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on Monday. "We strongly condemn this act of violence and extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as our earnest prayers for the swift recovery of those who were injured," the DepEd said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department considers this a high-alert situation. DepEd officials from the Central Office, alongside regional and division office personnel, are actively on the ground, coordinating with school authorities and law enforcement to secure the premises and ensure safety, security, and protection. The incident reportedly resulted in the deaths of three learners, with five others injured.
The DepEd emphasized that the safety and well-being of learners and personnel are among their top priorities. To address the tragedy's emotional toll, the Department is working with relevant government agencies to deploy critical medical assistance and appropriate psychosocial interventions for the affected individuals. They remain committed to ensuring that schools are secure and supportive environments for all.
The public has been urged to respect the privacy and dignity of all children involved in the tragedy. A thorough and impartial investigation is underway in coordination with the proper authorities.
Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez also expressed deep sadness over the shooting, stating that a school should be a place of learning, safety, and hope. He urged law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and assured that his office is coordinating with concerned authorities for any assistance needed by the affected families.
Meanwhile, social workers from the Department of Social Welfare and Development's Field Office 8 (Eastern Visayas) have provided psychological first aid and psychosocial support services to the bereaved families, survivors, and other affected individuals. DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao highlighted the profound impact of the tragedy, especially on children and young people. She assured continued coordination with the Tacloban LGU and other agencies to ensure appropriate interventions and assistance for affected families.
"Nakahanda po ang ahensya na magbigay ng karagdagang mga tulong sa lahat po ng naapektuhan ng trahedyang ito. Makakaasa po kayo na tuloy-tuloy po ang gagawing assessment ng ating mga social workers upang masiguro na lahat ng biktima ay mabibigyan ng karampatang tulong mula sa pamahalaan," Dumlao stated.
