Tacloban: The Department of Education (DepEd) in Eastern Visayas is set to hire at least 2,046 public school teachers for the current academic year, aiming to enhance the student-to-teacher ratio and reduce the workload of existing educators, a regional official announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd's recruitment plan includes assigning 1,245 teachers to kindergarten and elementary levels, 275 to junior high school, 440 to senior high school (SHS), and 37 to the Alternative Learning System for SHS. "Hiring more teachers allows schools to form optimal class sizes, which creates a better learning environment," stated DepEd Eastern Visayas Director Salustiano Jimenez in a news release.
The hiring process is expected to continue until September, with all applicants required to be included in the registry of qualified candidates, eliminating any priority list. Jimenez highlighted that every applicant must go through the standard application process.
The decision to hire additional teachers is informed by enrollment numbers and the retirement of teachers in the previous school year. Currently, Eastern Visayas has 55,885 public school teachers across 4,197 campuses in six provinces for the Academic Year 2025-2026.
Nationally, the Department of Budget and Management has sanctioned the creation of over 32,916 new teaching positions for the new academic year. Additionally, DepEd is maintaining its Expanded Career Progression system, with a goal to promote 100,000 teachers by 2026.
