Dumaguete city: More than 2,000 student leaders and youth advocates from across the country convened in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, for a significant event aimed at discussing pressing social issues and enhancing leadership skills.
According to Philippines News Agency, the gathering, part of the Learners' Convergence Philippines (LearnCon PH) 2025, is a flagship program of the Department of Education (DepEd). It provides a platform for students to express their thoughts on social issues, present projects, and engage in workshops, thematic sessions, and project pitching exercises. DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the importance of using this opportunity for dialogue, questioning, and idea-sharing.
A DepEd news release highlighted that LearnCon PH aims to foster leadership, civic engagement, and a sense of service among students. It is regarded as the largest in-person engagement of learners and education stakeholders from all 18 regions. The event aligns with Angara's five-point reform agenda focusing on innovation, inclusion, and learner empowerment.
Education Undersecretary for Operations Malcolm Garma noted that the weeklong LearnCon PH 2025 addresses themes such as leadership and civic engagement, health and well-being, gender and social inclusion, climate action, entrepreneurship, culture, and peacebuilding. Key events include the launch of the Landas Toolkit for career planning, the Learners' Congress for policy-making and governance training, and Project Pitching Sessions where students present solutions to experts.
Garma described LearnCon as a secure space for idea exchange, encouraging students to participate actively without fear. The DepEd reported that the event was attended by 2,061 delegates, including students from diverse educational backgrounds, Indigenous Peoples communities, and learners with disabilities.
Additional activities comprised thematic sessions on national issues, a Youth Leaders Forum featuring government and private sector representatives, and a Learners' Night celebrating youth creativity and collaboration.
