DepEd-Iloilo Assures Fair Probe in Teacher Sexual Abuse Case

Iloilo: The Schools Division of Iloilo of the Department of Education (DepEd) pledged a fair and impartial investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and abuse made against a teacher by two students.

According to Philippines News Agency, two minor students from Oton National High School have accused the teacher of molesting them on separate occasions. The division released a statement emphasizing their commitment to uphold the rights, dignity, and safety of all individuals within the educational community, stating that the allegations are being addressed with seriousness and urgency.

The division office assured that while accountability for any wrongdoing is ensured, the rights of teachers to a fair investigation, free from undue public condemnation, will also be upheld. They are also coordinating with authorities to ensure that appropriate legal and administrative procedures are followed.

The office has appealed to the public, particularly on social media, to exercise restraint and avoid making hasty judgments. They stressed the importance of not further traumatizing or stigmatizing those involved, especially the learners and educators, and emphasized the presumption of innocence and the right to due process.

Psychosocial support is currently being provided to those affected. The division has encouraged individuals with relevant information to come forward through proper channels, assuring them of compassionate and confidential handling of their disclosures.

A separate statement from the school reiterated its commitment to addressing issues involving its learners with seriousness and trust in a thorough, fair, and unbiased investigation.

The Oton Municipal Police Station's Women and Children Protection Desk is preparing evidence and witnesses to file a case against the teacher under Republic Act 7610, which protects children against abuse, exploitation, and discrimination.
