San francisco: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday said it is preparing assistance for a Filipino detainee set to be deported from the United States following a removal order issued by immigration authorities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco confirmed the impending deportation of Greggy Valerio Sorio, currently held at the Northwest ICE Detention Center. Sorio previously received legal support through the department's Legal Assistance Fund, but the U.S. Immigration Court still ordered his removal. Subsequently, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) denied his application for stay.

The department noted that the consulate had monitored Sorio's medical condition, including his hospitalization and follow-up care for ulcerative colitis, and appealed for humanitarian consideration to delay his deportation. However, the DFA said the ICE Health Services Corps has assessed his condition and cleared him medically for removal.

'The Department respects this decision and recognizes the sovereign right of the United States to determine who may be allowed to remain in its territory,' DFA said. In the meantime, the DFA said it intends to extend necessary assistance to Sorio upon his return to the Philippines.

The department reiterated its commitment to assist Filipinos overseas through its Foreign Service Posts, in line with international conventions and agreements, and with full respect for the laws and regulations of host governments.
