DICT Exec Paraiso is New CICC Head

Quezon City: Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso has been appointed as the new Deputy Executive Director of the Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center (CICC). Paraiso took his oath of office at the CICC head office, marking a new chapter for the agency as it expands its mandate under DICT Secretary Henry Aguda.

According to Philippines News Agency, Paraiso's appointment is set to bolster the agency's role in not only investigating cybercrimes but also in policy development and digital public protection. The CICC's expanded responsibilities align with the DICT's broader goals of safe and inclusive digital transformation. Previously, Paraiso served as the DICT spokesperson and brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

The CICC's duties have evolved to include not just addressing cybercrimes but also safeguarding the digital infrastructure of the country. The agency is committed to ensuring that the digital highway remains secure and trustworthy for all users. Part of its new mandate involves collaborating with lawmakers to craft legislation aimed at curbing disinformation and establishing clear criminal accountability.

The CICC employs data analysis to identify offenders, supports case development, and ensures strong referrals to law enforcement for prosecution. Its ongoing efforts are directed at combating fake news, online gambling, cyber fraud, and digital exploitation. The agency emphasizes a citizen-centric approach and is enhancing Action Center 1326, a 24/7 complaint and incident reporting center. It is also working with digital finance stakeholders to tackle financial scams and fraud.

In response to Paraiso's appointment, internet watchdog Scam Watch Pilipinas (SWP) expressed its support and eagerness to collaborate with the CICC. The SWP aims to work with Paraiso to improve the national Anti-Scam Hotline, boost anti-scam awareness campaigns, and further educational programs to protect Filipinos from online fraud.

The SWP's support comes after it urged the DICT to appoint a new CICC head following the resignation of former Executive Director Alexander Ramos and other executives, after DICT Secretary Henry Aguda's appointment in April.
