Manila: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the agency's reliance on objective criteria to evaluate individuals' positions concerning the West Philippine Sea (WPS) policy. This statement came in response to demands from various groups urging Teodoro to identify those not supporting the nation's stance on the WPS issue.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro clarified that the DND strictly adheres to objective criteria and does not consider any other standards when addressing matters that may affect the reputation of citizens. He highlighted that the department's standard requires identifying those who not only oppose Administrative Order (AO) 29 but also refuse to recognize its authority. This approach is deemed crucial, particularly following the recent submission of nautical charts for Bajo de Masinloc and Panatag.

Teodoro further noted that the DND does not engage in practices such as red-tagging or unjustly labeling individuals based on personal beliefs. The department maintains that tagging individuals must be based on their actions rather than their beliefs.

Administrative Order 29, signed by former President Benigno Aquino III in 2012, officially designates the maritime areas west of the archipelago as the West Philippine Sea. Teodoro reiterated that public officials are expected to comply with all laws and regulations issued lawfully. He stated that officials in disagreement with the country's legal stance have the option to challenge these through the courts but must adhere to existing laws while in office.

Teodoro concluded by asserting that officials have a duty to either uphold the law or take legal steps to challenge its constitutionality. Until such actions are taken, adherence to the law remains the only course of action.
