DOE Begins Construction of 64-MW Peak Solar Power Plant in Ajuy, Iloilo

Ajuy: Construction of the PHP2.37-billion, 62-megawatt peak solar power plant in Ajuy, Iloilo started Friday, eventually boosting power capacity in Panay Island while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Ajuy-1 Solar Power Project, located in Tipacla, Ajuy, and covering a 47.86-hectare area, is the province's first major ground-mounted solar facility. It is being developed by Jin Navitas Solaris, the Department of Energy (DOE) said in a press release.

The project will be connected to the Panay Island grid through the Sara-Panit 69 kV transmission line and has already completed the required System Impact Study. It is anticipated to enhance grid stability in northern Iloilo.

The solar power plant is part of DOE's Green Energy Auction Program 2 (GEA-2) and is entitled to a green energy tariff of PHP4.35 per kilowatt-hour. This development will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in the country's total energy mix to around 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

"This groundbreaking initiative not only marks a significant step in reducing our carbon footprint but also empowers local communities by providing them with reliable and renewable energy resources," Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said. "The Ajuy Solar Power Plant is a testament to our collective commitment to a sustainable energy future."
