Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) is considering making medical services free in government-run hospitals across the nation, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa announced. In an ambush interview with reporters, Herbosa revealed that individuals from low-income households, including beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), would be entitled to a no-balance billing policy in all DOH-run hospitals.
According to Philippines News Agency, Herbosa stated that they are currently studying the possibility of making 90 percent of medical services in ward and semi-private rooms free, with funding sourced from the sin tax. Herbosa mentioned ongoing discussions with public hospital directors and expressed hope for a definitive announcement by next week.
Herbosa noted that there was no opposition to the plan and expressed hope that any financial shortfalls would be addressed by the legislature, which provides funding to the Department of Health. This initiative is part of the DOH's efforts to expand access to healthcare and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for Filipinos seeking treatment in public hospitals.
The proposed move aligns with the Universal Health Care law's mandate to strengthen the healthcare system in the country, supplementing existing funds, the Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients, and benefit packages from the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
