Baguio city: The Department of Health (DOH) in the Cordillera region reported a total of 22 fireworks-related injuries during the holiday season, with 11 cases occurring on New Year's Day alone. DOH officials highlighted this data on Friday, emphasizing the need for increased safety measures.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOH-Cordillera chief Dr. Amelita Pangilinan noted that the single-day tally on New Year's Day doubled the region's cumulative cases since monitoring began on December 21. All victims were male, and 17 injuries were linked to illegal fireworks, including "kwitis," "boga," and "dynamite."
The injuries primarily affected the hands and eyes, with the highest number of cases reported in Apayao (8), followed by Kalinga (7), Baguio City (4), and Abra (3). Baguio City Health Officer Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes urged spectators to take protective measures during such celebrations. She advised wearing a face mask to avoid inhaling smoke, using eye protection, and donning long sleeves for safety.
Additionally, the Baguio City Police Office confiscated PHP118,755 worth of fireworks from December 1 to January 1 as part of efforts to curb illegal firework use. The DOH will continue its monitoring activities until January to ensure public safety.
