Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the formation of a specialized task force to address cases involving the operation of colorum vehicles, which are unregistered and operate illegally. The initiative was unveiled during a press briefing by Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida, highlighting the task force's focus on case buildup and public awareness campaigns.

According to Philippines News Agency, the newly established anti-colorum prosecution task force will collaborate with representatives from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). Vida emphasized the DOJ's commitment to working alongside the DOTR, LTFRB, and legally operating transport stakeholders to prosecute individuals and groups not adhering to legal transportation standards.

DOTR Secretary Giovanni Lopez expressed gratitude towards the DOJ for its involvement, noting that existing fines have proven ineffective in curbing the practice of colorum operations. Lopez highlighted the negative impact on legitimate transport operators, motorists, and passengers, stressing the need for stronger enforcement measures to deter illegal activities.

LTFRB Chairperson Vigor Mendoza II mentioned that the scope of the problem is still being assessed, with estimates suggesting that up to 90,000 vehicles of various types might be involved nationwide. To combat this issue, officials plan to initiate an information campaign in the coming week.

Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Deana Perez explained that violators of Republic Act 11659, known as the Public Service Act, could face imprisonment ranging from six to ten years. The task force will work in conjunction with the Presidential Anti Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), focusing on dismantling syndicates and organized groups facilitating colorum operations. The DOJ's strategy prioritizes thorough case preparation before court filings to ensure robust legal proceedings.
