DOJ Warns of Influential Figures in Missing ‘Sabungeros’ Case

Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued a warning regarding the case of the missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight aficionados), suggesting that powerful individuals with significant financial resources may be involved, potentially influencing judicial processes.

According to Philippines News Agency, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla expressed concerns about the influence of these figures, mentioning the substantial financial power of the e-sabong industry. Remulla emphasized the need to discuss the matter with the Chief Justice due to the potential for financial influence within the judiciary. During an interview, Remulla highlighted that the alleged mastermind believes they can exert influence even at the highest judicial level.

While Remulla refrained from naming the alleged mastermind, he indicated that the individual is part of a group of about 20 people, which includes government and police officials, who operate the industry with a corporate structure. The DOJ is committed to thoroughly investigating and building a case against those involved in this billion-peso industry.

In parallel, efforts are underway to locate the bodies of the missing sabungeros, allegedly dumped in Taal Lake. The DOJ is collaborating with various government agencies, including the Armed Forces, Navy, and Coast Guard, to conduct technical diving operations. Remulla mentioned seeking assistance from the Japanese government and noted that while they have remote vehicles at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), they lack the necessary technical expertise and experience.
