DOLE Engages Stakeholders to Safeguard Delivery Riders from Extreme Heat

Manila:The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) held a meeting with gasoline station and mall operators to discuss measures to protect delivery and transport riders from extreme heat and El Niño-related conditions. The meeting aimed to establish accessible welfare facilities for these platform-based workers.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE Secretary Francis Tolentino led the dialogue at the DOLE Central Office in Intramuros, Manila. The meeting focused on providing riders with access to facilities where they can rest, seek shelter, and attend to their basic needs during breaks between deliveries and trips.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for establishment operators to identify possible arrangements to make these facilities more accessible and responsive to the needs of the riders. Secretary Tolentino highlighted that this discussion builds on a previous meeting with platform companies, which addressed several items concerning a proposed labor advisory set to be issued.

Tolentino emphasized the importance of preparing for weather disturbances and considered the perspectives of gasoline station and mall operators in crafting effective measures. He urged the operators to submit their position papers on the proposed advisory by November 3.

The initiative highlights the shared responsibility among the government, digital platform companies, and the private sector in addressing the safety and health concerns of workers facing extreme weather conditions while working outdoors.
