National Museum Celebrates Centennial of Larry Alcala with Yearlong Exhibit

Daraga:The National Museum of the Philippines-Daraga has opened a yearlong exhibit titled 'Larry Alcala Slices of Life, Wit and Humor,' dedicated to the centennial birth year of National Artist for Visual Arts, Lauro "Larry" Alcala. The exhibition, which began on Friday, showcases the celebrated artist's humorous depictions of everyday life, inviting the public to revisit his impactful works.

According to Philippines News agency, the exhibit features selected prints of Alcala's cartoons, including pieces from the 1980s and those inspired by Bicol's cultural heritage and the iconic Mayon Volcano. The exhibit is free of charge and aims to highlight Alcala's significant contributions to Filipino culture and the arts.

Larry Alcala, born in Daraga on August 18, 1926, began his comics career in 1946 while studying at the University of the Philippines. He is renowned for creating over 500 characters and 20 comic strips, including popular titles such as 'Islaw Palitaw' and 'Kalabog en Bosyo.' His 'Slice of Life' series, a staple for newspaper readers, captured the essence of Filipino humor and culture.

Alcala's granddaughter, Ana Alcala, emphasized the centennial celebration's goal to demonstrate that creativity is a universal trait. Activities for the centennial, which commenced in August, include collaborations like the one with Cebuano designer Vito Selma, where children from Olango, Cebu, colored Alcala's illustrations on fishing boats.

Honey Beso, Director II of the NMP's South Luzon National Museums, expressed gratitude to Alcala's family for allowing the museum to host the exhibition. She noted the importance of rotating displays to keep visitors engaged and showcase the breadth of Alcala's work.

The exhibit also underscores Alcala's influence on aspiring artists, such as cartoonist Alfonso Miguel Baleda, who credits Alcala as a significant inspiration in his career. Alcala's legacy continues through his founding of the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas and Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, fostering the growth of Filipino cartooning and children's literature.

Larry Alcala passed away on June 24, 2002, in Bacolod City, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with new generations.
