Manila: Stranded commuters affected by flooding in parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) may take 'libreng sakay' (free ride) buses provided by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA). In a statement on Monday, the DOTr announced that the trucks and buses would provide free rides on select routes beginning at noon, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist stranded passengers.
According to Philippines News Agency, these free rides are available on routes including Quiapo to Angono, Rizal; Quiapo to Fairview, Quezon City; Lawton to Alabang, Muntinlupa City; and Philcoa to Fairview, Quezon City. The DOTr expressed its readiness to aid citizens stranded due to floods caused by heavy rains, ensuring their safe and comfortable return home.
Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported multiple flooded roads, ranging from gutter deep to two feet of water, in various NCR cities. These affected areas include Mandaluyong, Manila, Makati, Pasay, Para±aque, and Quezon City, with varying flood depths.
The enhanced southwest monsoon has resulted in days of widespread rainfall across Luzon and parts of the Visayas, prompting local governments to issue flood warnings and conduct evacuations in vulnerable areas. In its 5 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasted 100 to 200 mm of rainfall in Metro Manila and several other provinces until Tuesday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also issued an 'orange rainfall' warning in Metro Manila, indicating significant rainfall and potential flooding.
